Emotional Balance, Objectivity and Discipline to Take Important Steps
Getting stuck often begins with how we allow our mind to falsely convince us
Too often in life our emotions, feelings and conclusions lead to beliefs that we can not do something that would be helpful to our situation. We really believe that which isn’t factual or we decide what we can do won’t lead us to the bare minimum result with which we would be happy.
John Wooden, the legendary basketball coach at UCLA, who long dominated the sport like no other, knew better, which is why he recommended, advised and stressed to remain emotionally balanced, set aside what truly may not be possible to do and instead focus solely on what is in your ethical, moral capacity and power to do.
We aren’t always honest with ourselves about our capabilities. We usually can do more than we tell ourselves. And we certainly can do more than we really want to do.
The latter is about choice. Certainly, there are times where we should choose to bypass taking responsible, strategic action yet in the context that Wooden is communicating, doing what we have the ability to do, utilizing the resources, whatever they might be, is the way forward as a matter of mitigation, risk management or accomplishing something that excites us.
We may not, on our own, always recognize what we can do.
Meeting with someone to have a conversation can help us learn on our own, through questions, what is possible and that which we feel confident pursuing. Or we may seek profession consulting and learn.
Whichever that might be, what Wooden recommends is “the way.”
